Nappy Wraps: Everything You Need to Know

Welcome to the The Nappy Gurus Guide to Nappy Wraps & Covers. Here at The Nappy Gurus we've been all about reusable nappies since way back in 2003 so we've been asked literally every question under the sun about nappy wraps and covers.

We understand that sometimes all the jargon around modern cloth nappies can seem a bit confusing, so we've gathered all your questions here in one place.

If you're considering making the switch from disposable nappies to washable nappies or are just curious about how it all works, nappy wraps (or nappy covers) are a key component you'll want to understand. They play a crucial role in keeping your baby dry and comfortable.

Here’s The Nappy Gurus guide to everything you need to know about nappy wraps:

What is a Nappy Wrap?

Nappy wraps, also known as nappy covers, are designed to go over absorbent nappies to provide a waterproof layer that prevents leaks.

Unlike the absorbent part of the nappy (which may be fitted or sized nappies and fasten together over your baby, or be an insert, pocket or flat nappy), the wrap doesn't soak up liquid but instead ensures that any moisture is contained.

They're made made from waterproof materials like PUL (Polyurethane Laminate) or TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane), although wool covers are also available which allow urine to evaporate from the nappy.

Nappy wraps come with either velcro or poppered closures and in various sizes and designs.

What's The Difference Between a Nappy Wrap And a Nappy Cover?

There's no difference between a nappy wrap and cover. The names can be used interchangeably but mean the same thing. It's simply the leakproof waterproof wrap which fits over the absorbent part of your nappy.

How to Use a Nappy Wrap

Fitting your nappy wrap right can make all the difference in comfort and leak prevention. Generally if you have leaks in your nappy, it's because the wrap hasn't been fitted correctly. Here's how to use a nappy wrap:

  1. Choose the Right Size: Ensure the nappy wrap fits your baby snugly but comfortably. It should cover the absorbent nappy completely without being too tight.
  2. Place the Nappy: First, lay the absorbent nappy under your baby, or fit the fitted nappy if that's what you're using then place the nappy wrap over it.
  3. Secure the Wrap: Most nappy wraps have adjustable snaps or Velcro closures that make them easy to put on and take off. Adjust these to fit securely without digging into your baby’s skin. Fit the nappy into the knicker crease at the top of the lags and make sure there is no nappy trapped underneath.
  4. Check for Gaps: You should be able to insert two fingers at the waistline. Make sure there are no gaps around the legs or waist, as these can lead to leaks. They should be secure, but not tight.

Can You Use a Pocket Nappy as a Wrap?

Yes, you can use a pocket nappy as a wrap. Just remove any inner booster and then add your absorbent layer on top. You'll probably need to add a nappy liner (either a disposable liner or a fleece layer) depending on the top layer of your nappy.

Can You Reuse Nappy Wraps?

Absolutely, yes you can reuse nappy wraps. They don’t need to be washed after every use unless they get soiled. Just wipe them down if they're only lightly used and you can reuse immediately. This reusability not only saves money but also reduces waste, making them an eco-friendly choice.

How to Wash Nappy Wraps

The washing routine is simple. Here's how to wash nappy wraps:

  • Dry pail your wraps and nappies after use in a wet bag or nappy pail
  • Wash them at the manufacturer recommended temperature. Most manufacturers recommend a max of 40c to avoid damaging the waterproofing
  • Wash with your nappies. This is normally a cold rinse without detergent, then a longer wash with appropriate amount of detergent
  • Avoid fabric softeners and bleach, as these can damage the material and reduce their effectiveness.
  • Drying your nappies and wraps is best done by air drying, to prolong the lifespan of both. Tumble drying can cause the wraps to crack or warp.

How Many Nappy Wraps Do I Need?

The number of nappy wraps you'll need depends on your baby's age and how often you have a wash going on. Generally, you'll need 4-6 nappy wraps as a good start. Younger babies or those who are heavy wetters might require more frequent changes.
